Kanon Mizushiro (水城 花音 Mizushiro Kanon?) is the main protagonist of Jewelpet Sunshine. Ironically, despite being the protagonist, she can sometimes be considered an antagonist because of her relationship with Ruby.
Appearance[]
As a child, Kanon has her hime cut hair like she still does, but shorter. She also wears a light blue yellow-buttoned shirt with a blue skirt along with white and red-striped stockings and black shoes.
As a teenager during her third year at Sunshine Academy, Kanon has long black hair cut in a Hime cut, and large, deep red (or sometimes, brown) eyes. She wears the Sunshine Academy female uniform that includes a light grey long sleeve shirt, a red tie, white skirt, black long stockings and brown shoes.
As a teacher in the future, she wears a professional black suit jacket paired with a matching black skirt. She wears a light lavender dress shirt underneath the jacket, which is complemented by a violet necktie. Her hair is styled neatly, pulled back into a ponytail with a pink light-colored hair tie.
Personality[]
As a child, Kanon was a sweet, joyful, and yet always sad girl since she was always separated by her grandmother from Mikage by her grandmother, while this was happening, Kanon was thought to be a curse by her grandmother and family until finally her family sold her to the Mizushiros at age five. Then after Kanon; due to being made fun of, not having anyone play with her in the park or being picked last in things at school and even, not being found in hide-and-seek along with being bullied all the time started to become depressed, and upset constantly.
As a teenager at first. Kanon was lonely and shy when first she came to Sunshine Academy stemming from her trauma in her past by not being to make friends at all; until a frog fell on her face and she fell into the muddy mud fields, then she reunited with Mikage, who helped her up from said mud field. Then after, Kanon made a personality of being the most spoiled student in her class, aside from being posh, mean and nasty. She often gets into arguments with her roommate/classmate/love rival, Ruby due to their warped friendship, whether it was cause Ruby had a crush on Mikage or simply for causing so much trouble for her.
Kanon has a ability to get whatever she wants stems not only from her spoiled upbringing but also from her sharp mind and manipulative tendencies. With her posh demeanor, she knows exactly how to use her charm and intelligence to bend situations in her favor.
Despite her nasty streak, Kanon has a much tender side when she is being with the subject of her affection, namely her brother. She is also a very girly girl that prioritizes her beauty with high standards to maintain her self-care. She also thinks of the Jewelpets as just only solely animals, instead of magical beings from another world unlike everyone else around her.
Outside of her mean, posh and nasty personality. Kanon can also be emotional and upset, and but truly cares about her friends, classmates, and family, she can also become sad and emotional whenever the trauma of her past would catch up to her, making her shed tears, becoming scared and even, losing her confidence and even so to the point where she might think that someone or something could hurt or even, harm her.
In the future, as an adult. Kanon becomes tough-as-nails, stemming and so-what coping from her past trauma all while taking Iruka-sensei’s non-sense attitude. Despite that bit of her new personality, Kanon has now been mellowing out for the most part, but is still saddened by her brother’s sudden disappearance, plus every horrible thing that happened to her; wondering what happened to him and if he’ll ever give any answers of sorts for his vanishing.
Spoiler warning! The article/section below contains major plot details of the story or the character. |
History[]
Birth and separation[]
In the year of 1999, Born as Kanon Shiraishi (白石 花音, Shiraishi Kanon), she was the younger twin sister of Mikage Shiraishi. Kanon was considered a cursed child by her grandmother because of the strange, spiral birthmark on her head. Her parents pleaded not to kill her because she was still a baby at the time. However, their grandmother thought she was a heir-bringer of disgrace to the family (it is later revealed that the birthmark is a sign of being one of the Wise Ones). With no choice at the age of five, she was "sold" to the Mizushiros and they raised her as their own child, with Kanon not knowing anything about her birth family at all.
Growing up[]
Three years later after being separated at the age of five, Kanon and Mikage (who were now kids) met up with each other once again. However they didn’t recognize each other as siblings yet. On those times, Mikage and Kanon went out together in a theme park and she ate a soft serve ice cream, but accidentally dropped it, causing her to cry. Mikage tried to comfort her, but this doesn't last long as Kanon's adoptive parents left, and took her and both haven't seen each other once again. Supposedly Kanon that night, though it was never said. She supposedly had a tantrum, wanting to meet Mikage again with her parents trying to calm her down.
Ever since Kanon was a kid, she was always the last for something or always be alone. Like when she was playing on the playground when kids forming teams, she was the last to be picked. Whenever they played hide-and-seek, she was the last one that the seeker looked for (supposedly they always never found her.) and Kanon was always alone at the park to rot while in tears, begging someone or anyone to play with her but they never played with her; they never did. As Kanon always went home from the park; always upset and in tears, cause nobody would play with her; though she played with them, they never played with her.
Kanon also never had friends nor made any since she was bullied and made fun of, cause of the spiral in her hair and that she was cursed; Kanon also felt depression once in a while or even every day without telling her parents despite the bullying and depression always happening every single day.
The only thing that ever coped Kanon’s fear and depression was pudding as her mother made pudding for her every single day expect for the days she would be misbehaving.
Attending the Sunshine Academy[]
In the year of 2013, Kanon was now a teenager and the reason she came to Sunshine Academy was to change herself, and find a dream. During that time, she tripped and fell into the muddy rice fields until she met Mikage once more, who helped her get up, starting their forbidden love relationship towards each other. She was glad to be with Mikage in the class as classmates.
In her second year, she defended Titana from King, Alex and Brownie's harassment, which led to Titana becoming her posse and admirer.
However, things didn't go well when Kanon also met a familar Jewelpet named Ruby in the class too and because Ruby had the same crush on Mikage like she did, considering the fact that Ruby was also her roommate and finding out both Mikage and Ruby being together while watching the fireworks in episode 14a, Kanon got very jealous for it and the result, she would argue and even tried to fight over Mikage's love against Ruby. Although they can sometimes help each other too.
Discovering the truth[]
While Kanon didn't notice it until later on, she was being pulled from the Sunshine Academy after hearing the news that Kanon's supposed mother feeling angry for finding out Kanon and Mikage getting together during the musical event. She later talked with Mikage in the dormitory that night. Much later, when she found out that she is leaving the Academy and go back to the human world by tomorrow, Kanon felt crushed and even in shock for it.
So the next day has come to her to leave, but since Kanon felt very sad and too lonely to leave, she held on Mikage and confessed him to come with him, leading him to accept her confession. And so both Kanon and Mikage decided to leave the academy and run away together back to the human world.
After coming to their home, Kanon tried to stay with Mikage together without any problems. However, Titana somehow appeared from her bag, who snuck himself into her bag and watched the couple's every move. Because of this, it led Kanon and Mikage to fail at attempting. At some point, Kanon and Mikage somehow couldn't seem to find a way to live with each other, but they started to find something special about themselves while Titana tried to separate them. Then suddenly, the owner of the Strawberry Cafe, Master, caught both of them and took them back to Jewel Land and to the Academy for a serious conversation with Kanon's mother (whom she sent the Master to do it).
After Kanon, Mikage, & Titana returned and during the conversation, Kanon was slapped by her mother for disobeying her orders and dating with Mikage, even though she never knew that until then. At first, Teacher Iruka & Jill thought to expel Kanon from the Sunshine Academy, but after hearing the words of Mikage and finding out that there are people who are very worried of Kanon and never wanted her to leave, the teachers and Kanon's mother decided that she should stay and continue her studies, but Kanon's mother tells her to not talk or even get close to Mikage. Which let Kanon both relieved to stay but sad that she can't talk to Mikage.
After feeling so troubled as she could not talk or get near Mikage all the time, Kanon sent Titana to the human world to spy on Mikage and see if Titana could find something about him. Later on, Titana came back from there with a photo. Kanon decided to take a look at the photo and discovered that his photo shows that she herself actually got to see Mikage when they were kids without remembering their past. And with that, Kanon learned something about this shocking truth between both herself and Mikage.
Kanon's supposed mother told her to come with her to have a talk, while Kanon's supposed father did the same thing with Mikage. In between places, both Kanon and Mikage learned about the truth about themselves being twins all the time, about Kanon's supposed parents now raising her the whole time and about both being separated by their grandmother due to Kanon being thought to be the cursed child. Because of those truths, Kanon felt emotionally crushed and runs away from her supposed mother while Mikage himself could not believe that he had a twin sister all along. Even Ruby became shocked as she heard about Kanon and Mikage's shrouded past after she went to look for Kanon. Mikage went to look for Kanon and found her crying and feeling down from what her supposed mother, so he had to cheer her up a bit.
Kanon decided to actually endure all of these truths by ending the love relationship with Mikage to become twins again. In the last minutes of the first part, Kanon would finally get to reunite with her real parents after over 10 years of separation, although Kanon and Mikage would continue on Sunshine Academy as twins for better or for worst.
The Wise Ones[]
When Jewelina was corrupted by the influence of Dark Jewel Power, Kanon was one of the seven surviving members of the Plum Class and also the entire academy. She and Iruka had previously tried finding help from other Jewelpets and even Sweetspets, but they all seemed affected by Dark Jewel Power as well. After Junko Mihara gave them her notebook, Kanon and Iruka found Munata in hopes of his assistance, but he too succumbed to Dark Jewel Power. Soon, most of the students were frozen solid by Dark Jewelina, including Titana who sacrificed himself to save her.
During this time, Kanon finally realized she was born to be one of the Seven Wise Ones, with her birthmark as a hint the entire time. Kanon, Iruka, Ruby, Jasper, Peridot, Labra and Angela then hatched a plan to lock away the Dark Jewel Power and restore Jewelina to normal, but Iruka, Peridot, Labra, Jasper and Angela all fell and sacrificed themselves for Kanon and Ruby. Both Kanon and Ruby then got Mikage to help them, where they reached the Jewel Castle's roof to confront Dark Jewelina, and Kanon finally acknowledged that Ruby is her friend. But Dark Jewelina soon held both girls hostage by placing as weights for a balance, and let them free-fall when Mikage was unable to make a choice. Both Kanon and Mikage ended up watching Ruby being hit by Dark Jewelina's attack and dying in Mikage's arms.
As she listened to Mikage's past with Ruby, both Kanon mourned over Ruby's demise. However, Ruby was revived by Kanon and her brother's love, and Kanon and Ruby, along with the other revived characters, joined together to restore Jewelina with their Young Jewel Power.
After the battle against Dark Jewel Power and returning Jewelina to normal, Kanon and her classmates all graduated, although they didn't get to see Mikage again.
Even though, after all that. Kanon still has all her trauma still catching up to her, even in secret. She is tormented and upset by her past and the horrors that it secretly inflicted upon her.
Future[]
Five years after the graduation ceremony, Kanon became an adult and would later become the newest teacher of the Plum Section along with her teacher Iruka. Later on, Kanon came to church to see Iruka and Jill getting married and for the reunion, she was very happy to see and talk with Ruby again for so many years, even though Kanon became a bit uneasy. She then proclaimed to Ruby that she would beg for Mikage for his explanation in case he would return, unaware that Mikage has already been reborn into a Jewelpet.
Other Appearances[]
In episode 21b of Jewelpet Magical Change, Kanon makes a cameo appearance in one of Ruby's recorded videos, along with the previous human protagonists of the entire anime series.
In Jewelpet the Movie: Sweets Dance Princess Kanon made a cameo when she was teaching a bunch of Jewelpets how to dance though it is a alternative version of her since Rinko, Aoi and Minami from Jewelpet as well as Akari Sakura, Jolly and Merry and Yuuma Jinnai from Jewelpet Twinkle appeared in the movie as well despite them from being different continuities/series.
Relationships[]
- Ruby - Kanon's roommate. They have a very difficult friendship because of their personalities; they're also rivals for Mikage's love. Kanon and Ruby often have fights with each other, but sometimes they work together to overcome obstacles that come in their way.
- Hinata Asaka - Although Kanon doesn't talk much with Hinata, they seem to get along a few times.
- Sapphie - Kanon seems to dislike Sapphie, as she gets angry at her for stealing her beauty face machine.
- Titana - Titana basically dedicates, devotes and protects Kanon and also cares about her more than Komachi and Kaede do. It appears he has a crush on and also admires her.
- Shouko Aizawa - Like Hinata, Kanon and Shouko don't seem to talk very often, but when both of them got arrested on Thanksjewel Day, they both work together with Jill to bust out of jail run by Ruby, Angela, and Labra.
- Mikage Shiraishi - Kanon was in love with Mikage. But unbeknownst to her, he is actually related to her since their birth and separation. They first met when they were kids walking around in a carnival park and became best childhood friends. Years later, they met each other again when Kanon fell in the mud on the first day of school in the Sunshine Academy. Mikage saved Kanon herself and she eventually fell in love with him ever since. She continued to harbor romantic feelings for him, but still didn't know the truth that both of them are actually related. After discovering the truth, Kanon decided to end her relationship with Mikage and became relatives again.
- Teacher Iruka - Being her teacher in the Plum class, she gets annoyed with him very easily.
- Komachi Saotome - One of the girls who works with Kanon, she admires Kanon and even worships her.
- Kaede Kikuchi - Just like Komachi, she also admires Kanon and worships her too.
Etymology[]
- The name Kanon means "flower, blossom" (花) (ka) and "sound" (音) (non).
- Kanon's surname Mizushiro means "water" (水) (mizu) and "castle" (城) (shiro).
- Her birth surname Shiraishi means "white" (白) (shira) and "stone, volume measure" (石) (ishi).
Trivia[]
- Kanon is the first heroine in the series who doesn't have an innocent, cheerful and shy personality, and is instead prideful and outspoken.
- Another major character, Hinata Asaka, has the personality of the former, and was Ruby's roommate before the switch.
- Kanon is the only protagonist to:
- be an anti-hero.
- have two different last names.
- not appear in every episode of her featured season.
- Kanon shares the same voice actress as Catherine from Jewelpet Twinkle☆, as well as a fairy in Jewelpet Attack Travel!.
- Being 17-18 years old for the bulk of the series (and 23 in the epilogue), Kanon is the oldest protagonist in the Jewelpet anime series overall.
- Year In, Year Out, Yay! revealed that Kanon was born in the year of the rabbit. (With Kanon being born in 1999, the events of Sunshine took place in 2015 to very early 2016, with the previous Year of the Rabbit being 1999 which was Kanon’s birth year as there was no Year of the Rabbit in 1995 obviously.)
- Kanon, throughout the course of Sunshine, has a curse of making desserts into swirly poop shapes, much to her chagrin. However, this turns out to be a foreshadowing of her status as a Wise One (related to the birthmark on her head), and also her connection to Mikage as his sister (related to them sharing ice cream when they were children before their second separation).
- Kanon is one of only four Jewelpets protagonists besides Akari, Chiari, Airi and Ruri to have more than just Ruby as their partner.
